James's paintings are the result of a three stage process of observation, expression, and reduction. They are a reaction to urban living and an attempt to capture and control the energy, movement and growth of populated and industrial areas, and the machinery that shapes our immediate surroundings. From energetic pen and ink studies, to expressive and aggressive mixed media paintings, James finally arrives at highly reduced and stylised works, using flat colours and clean, bold outlines to celebrate the subject matter.
